que onda, güey is a variable edition screenprint inspired by the visual culture and aesthetics of lowriders. Drawing from the artist’s experiences growing up around Chicano car culture, the work reflects on the distinctive visual language of lowriders, vehicles that share recognizable body forms yet are uniquely transformed through color, pattern, and personal style.
In this series, the body of the car remains consistent while variations in color and design shift from print to print, echoing the individuality and customization central to lowrider culture. The phrase “¿Qué onda, güey?”, a casual greeting commonly used among Mexican communities, accompanies the image, grounding the work in everyday language and cultural familiarity. Together, the visual and linguistic elements highlight themes of identity, community, and personal expression within Chicano cultural traditions.
