¡Mírame! is a screenprint created in response to María Cristina Tavera’s print Los Gallos, which reflects on how language and cultural context shape the way people perceive reality. Building on this idea, the print reimagines two roosters not simply as rivals but as luchadores engaged in a wrestling match. The work draws inspiration from the tradition of exóticos in lucha libre, performers who historically embodied exaggerated, often stereotypical representations of queer Mexican men and were frequently positioned as figures of ridicule within the sport.
In this reinterpretation, the exótico emerges victorious, challenging the historical expectation of humiliation. The figure shouts “¡Mírame! / Look at me,” asserting visibility and recognition in both Spanish and English. Through this reversal, the print reflects on performance, perception, and the power dynamics embedded in cultural representation.
