Compartir is a screenprint that reflects on family, reconciliation, and the communal rituals embedded in everyday Mexican culture. The work draws from a personal story shared during one of the frequent phone calls between the artist and his mother, in which a moment of family tension was resolved through a simple visit over coffee and pan dulce. In many Mexican households, bringing pan dulce signals an invitation to sit, talk, and reconnect.
The print centers on a concha, one of the most recognizable varieties of pan dulce, being split in half by two hands representing the artist’s parents. The gesture becomes a visual metaphor for sharing, conversation, and repair within family relationships. Text elements incorporated into the composition feature the handwriting of the artist’s parents, while the phrase at the bottom translates to “only with a little bread,” echoing a sentiment often expressed by the artist’s mother that even life’s challenges can be softened through the act of sitting together and sharing food. Through this imagery, Compartir reflects on food as a symbol of community, care, and familial connection.
